ZOOM COGS Workshop: Resolving Conflict – March 26th 7PM
Conflict is an unavoidable part of life. Whether it’s a disagreement with our advisor, an ongoing dispute with loved ones or roommates, or personal differences with colleagues and friends, learning to manage and resolve conflict is an essential life skill. In this workshop, we will talk about some basic principles of productive confrontation and how to apply them across different contexts.

As members of a caring community, all of us play important roles in nurturing the development of our students. This training session will outline important information about mental health and will help you examine the role you play in providing a supportive academic environment, which includes assisting students who may be in distress.

OCT 24, 2019 – Bias Incident Listening Session for Grad/Professional Students
COGS held a listening session for graduate & professional students to process the recent bias incidents that have taken place on campus. Several University Administrators were in attendance to hear student feedback and CAPS was on hand for one-on-one meetings if needed. The aim was to provide a forum for meaningful and respectful discussion of the grad/professional student viewpoint of these incidents and the overall campus climate, as well as explain the resources available to help. The session was moderated by the Office of the Ombudsperson.

COGS Workshop: Building a Relationship with Your Advisor
Building, Maintaining and Growing Healthy Advising Relationships
Facilitated by Dr. Shannon Lynn Burton, University Ombudsperson.
September 20th, 12:30-2:00 pm in Erickson Hall, Room 228

What does a healthy advising relationship between graduate students and mentors look like? What are graduate student rights and responsibilities in building and maintaining these connections? What happens when things go wrong? Dr. Burton will address how advising relationships should work in an ideal setting, tips for communicating effectively with advisors, how to recognize signals that indicate potential concern and how to resolve conflict when it arises.
The discussion will include the following topics:

COGS Workshop: Staying Motivated and Finding Purpose
Motivation and Persistence in Graduate School. One of the most difficult things about graduate school is having to sustain high levels of motivation for a very long time.
