This event is part of the 2023 Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration Series
Invest in your collaboration skills while learning from colleagues across campus at this half-day summit. Dr. Lotrecchiano will open with a keynote and interactive work covering “Seven Things to Know about TeamWork.” After lunch, we will explore how people in different fields navigate common collaboration challenges through a panel discussion and audience engagement. Participants will gain awareness of best practices from the collaboration literature and from collected experience and begin applying these insights to their own work. Snacks and lunch will be provided.
Cost: $10
RCR credit: 1-hour discussion-based basic training, or 3-hours annual refresher training (the differential amount is to ensure that students receive basic education in a variety of topics, not mainly this one).

This event is part of the 2023 Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration Series
The Science of Team Science (the study of science teams and their functioning) and team science (the collaborative engagements of multiple disciplines) have, since the early 21st century, contributed to new outlooks, processes, and expectations for industry, human wellbeing, and scholarly pursuits.
Through the lenses of psychology, management, social psychology, anthropology, and sociology, the study of teams in the last quarter of a century can inform best practices for the work that both academics and laborers do. How does knowledge about teaming impact the modern university that seeks to grow students to be more suited for the changing landscape of the global stage and its most complex of problems?
Higher education is faced with a new paradigm that not only prepares students to be experts in a chosen discipline but also requires them to be able to work in a new information and collaborative age, where skills and competencies that foster cross-disciplinary engagement and problem solving will be the foundation for global impact.
RCR credit: 1 hour

NIH and other funding agencies are requiring comprehensive strategies for proper research methods and procedures, and the presentation of research data. These include applying rigor, minimizing bias, and maximizing reproducibility in all efforts. This workshop will discuss means by which to address these within research. The primary principles covered within this session are rigor and reproducibility.

All too often, however, collaborative activities are presented to them with little to no instruction provided on how to actually collaborate. The skills and behaviors necessary for effective collaboration are often assumed by instructors to already be present and mastered in their students. In this session you will reflect on the use of collaborative learning in your own classrooms. You will learn about topics for instructional content to help you develop and reinforce constructive collaborative behaviors in your students.

Is working from home making it hard to find writing time? Would scheduling regular, specific times to write about your outreach or engagement work be helpful? If so, please join us on the first Friday of each month for three hours of dedicated time to advance your scholarship. Past participants have written journal articles, grant proposals, book chapters, theses or dissertations, curricula, pieces for public audiences, and community engagement portfolios. Participants should plan to write for the full three hours. We start the write-in by sharing writing goals for the day and wrap up with accomplishments and next steps.
Write-Ins are free, but registration is required.

In this online session, we ask how our syllabi can be revolutionary experiments in reimagining and restructuring a small part of the vast educational project. Join to learn about and discuss one model for engaging a living syllabus--a syllabus that unfolds through collective processes in the context of one course.
Facilitator Bio: Sabina Vaught is a Professor and Director of the Kinloch Commons for Critical Pedagogy and Leadership. Dr. Vaught's research considers global carceral and liberatory knowledge movements broadly and the race-gender labor and conquest relationships among schools, prisons, and insurgent communities specifically.

The Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) at Michigan State University (MSU) was started with funding from the National Science Foundation. MSU AGEP supports recruitment, retention, and graduation of underrepresented U. S. minorities in doctoral programs of the natural and social sciences, mathematics, and engineering. The MSU AGEP Learning Community is an informal environment where students from varying disciplines can gather, share their research in a 10-minute presentation, or discover that their graduate toils are not unusual. Those in attendance are privy to information regarding fellowships, career opportunities, even summer internships, pertaining to the group.

Graduate School Write-Ins are co-sponsored by the Graduate School and The Writing Center at MSU. The write-ins are hosted and facilitated to provide writers with an opportunity to write in a shared writing space where other writers are present, and a writing center consultant/staff member is present to provide consultations for writers who would like to have a consultation appointment during the session.
Along with this, the write-ins provide an opportunity for facilitators to promote and share information about upcoming events hosted by the Graduate School, Writing Center, and other campus partners such as the University Outreach and Engagement Office and to provide resources and information that can be used to form graduate writing groups, have writing center appointments or attend workshops (provided by the Graduate School) cater to graduate students based on goals they may share during the write in.
Event will be held at the Graduate School- Chittenden Hall room 110. Zoom link will be shared with registrants prior to the date of the workshop.
*Food and activities are based on registration numbers. Please note that your registration is a commitment to attend.

How might the Graduate School better support students across campus so that academic success can be widely fostered?

Academic research sits at the crossroads of curiosity and expertise; however, these categories are often at odds. Our research should be driven by curiosity and about the questions we hope to answer. We are intrigued by these yet unanswered questions that pique our curious explorations of a field of study.
In contrast to a curiosity-driven approach, we are often compelled to consistently demonstrate expertise in a field and to show that we have a firm purchase on the answers we are in process of answering. In this talk, Jason Farman discusses his own balance between these categories, providing a how-to guide for pursuing curiosity and fields of study that are outside your specific areas of expertise.

In late January 2020, the Graduate School convened a half-day, state-of-the-art program for Graduate Program Directors. The focus of this unique gathering was to highlight various components of the Graduate School’s then newly-designed strategic plan; develop partnerships throughout our large and complex university; and discuss pressing issues pertaining to graduate education and graduate student success.
Expanding upon this effort, on April 21, 2023, the Graduate School will hold a Graduate Program Directors Summit from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., Marriott East Lansing, University Ballroom. Coffee and light refreshments will be available from 8 a.m. until 8:30 a.m., followed by brief introductory remarks.
From 9 a.m. to noon, three main topics will be explored from multiple perspectives:
mentoring graduate students
the value of strategic assessments of graduate programs
promoting inclusive excellence and DEI in graduate recruitment and retention effortsTo allow for adequate reflection and informal dialogues, there will be several breaks throughout the program, including a networking lunch.
Graduate program directors are strongly encouraged to attend the 2023 Graduate Program Directors Summit. It promises to be informative, engaging, interactive, and innovative. It will provide an ideal and dynamic forum for coming together to explore important aspects of graduate education.

This workshop will review the different types of intellectual property created in the academic setting namely copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. The workshop will also cover export control regulations. Export controls are U.S. laws and regulations that regulate and restrict the release of critical technologies, information, and services to foreign nationals, within and outside of the United States, and foreign countries for reasons of foreign policy and national security.
