In this session we will share ways instructors can collect feedback from students about teaching. Participants will walk away with an example for collecting feedback, discuss how to design effective questions to elicit useful feedback from students on their learning, and reflect on how it can be used to improve instruction to impact instructor and student success.

Well-being is a trendy topic these days, and it is also a vital component to a successful life no matter your field or focus. It may be hard to keep your mental, physical, and relational health as a priority while a graduate or professional student, but it is not impossible. In this session, we will discuss practical tips to help you manage the stress of graduate school while advancing your academic and professional goals. You will also learn about helpful resources offered through the Graduate School and at MSU.
This workshop is open to new and current graduate and professional students. Registration opens on January 13th and closes the day before each session.

Anderson Lecture Series: Slavery to Freedom gives members of the mid-Michigan community opportunities to interact with multicultural leaders from education, business, industry, entertainment and government. For 23 years, this series has featured living icons of the American Civil Rights Movement. All Activities are free of charge.
Marley Dias began working as an activist at the age of 11 when she created #1000BlackGirlBooks, collecting over 13,000 children’s books featuring Black girls as the lead character. She is also the author of Marley Dias Gets It Done: And So Can You! She was recognized by TIME in 2018 as one of the 24 most influential teens and was named the youngest member of the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Today, Dias is a student at Harvard University and is the executive producer and host of Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices on Netflix.

Is working from home making it hard to find writing time? Would scheduling regular, specific times to write about your outreach or engagement work be helpful? If so, please join us on the first Friday of each month for three hours of dedicated time to advance your scholarship. Past participants have written journal articles, grant proposals, book chapters, theses or dissertations, curricula, pieces for public audiences, and community engagement portfolios. Participants should plan to write for the full three hours. We start the write-in by sharing writing goals for the day and wrap up with accomplishments and next steps.
Write-Ins are free, but registration is required.

The Michigan chapter of the Scholars Strategy Network is sponsoring a training workshop on state legislative sessions. The workshop provides critical knowledge that can be used to foster evidence-based legislation. It provides scholars with practical steps for getting engaged with elected officials. Participants learn about state legislatures, the cycle of state legislation, and how and when they can engage. Researchers will be given concrete tips on how to track legislation and determine who in government is the proper target for outreach.

WOCI is excited to inform you about our workshop series on Surviving Comprehensive Exams. We have two upcoming sessions on Preparing for Oral Exams and Preparing a Dissertation Prospectus and Defense geared toward womxn of color scholars. Our workshops feature both graduate students who recently passed comps and faculty who have both taken comps and given them. Our panelists also come from colleges around campus.
This workshop is designed to help graduate students who are preparing for comps. We strongly encourage 1st and 2nd year PhD students to attend this in hopes that we can help them demystify the comps process well before they are scheduled to take these exams. We also encourage early career faculty who have never given a comps exam to join us as well. They can hear from experienced faculty members about how they facilitate oral exams and prospectus defenses. If you have any questions, please email msu.woci@msu.edu.

Dr. Angela Davis, a university educator who is well-known for her movements for social justice through her activism and scholarship, emphasizing the “importance of building communities of struggle for economic, racial and gender justice.” The author of 11 books, including Abolition.Feminism.Now, which she co-authored with Gina Dent, Erica Meiners and Beth Richie, Dr. Davis is known for helping to popularize the notion of a “prison industrial complex,” urging others to think about a world without prison systems.

This interactive, hybrid writing workshop is designed to help students develop an individualized plan for understanding graduate school more generally and graduate writing more specifically. This workshop is designed for students in both the early and latter years of their master’s degree.
This 3-hour workshop will concentrate on understanding the transition to graduate school, navigating master’s degree coursework and graduation options (thesis, exams, portfolios, etc.), locating and using professional and personal support resources, and writing for both the degree and future job. Participants will create academic timelines for their master’s work (coursework, conference presentations, internships, etc.) at MSU and discuss technologies and habits that can help them stay on task. Participants will also discuss how to manage the stress that often pervades the life of master’s students and how to select and work with a committee.
The workshop will end with participants exploring and sharing their current writing practices, writing and revision strategies, and strategies for overcoming writer's block and procrastination. Facilitators will help guide discussions on adopting and maintaining productive practices to help maintain focus on academic and professional goals in times when we are collectively working through the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing racial and systematic injustice and police violence against the Black community.
Zoom link will be shared with registrants prior to the date of the workshop.

Writing a winning grant requires a winning strategy. In this two-day (afternoons of May 10 & 11) webinar designed for faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and administrative staff who have some exposure to writing grant applications, Write Winning Grants comprehensively covers practical and conceptual aspects essential to the proposal-writing process. Learn how to tailor your content to relevant agencies, develop strategies for each section of the application, and to articulate your proposal in a way that makes reviewers want to read it.
Attendees will receive a copy of The Grant Application Writer’s Workbook, which has been written to complement and extend the seminar. Led by John Robertson from Grant Writers’ Seminars & Workshops. Cost to order and receive your agency specific workbook is $90.
The Graduate School and COGS will pay for 50 doctoral students to attend. Preference will be given to those students who have not previously attended. Participants will be provided a copy of all the presentation slides via email along with the Zoom meeting info just before the seminar. Please note, due to the cost of this event, interested doctoral students should be planning on writing a grant in the near future.

The Leadership Fellows Program aims to provide graduate and professional students meaningful leadership development opportunities through engaging with a diverse community of scholars, and positions students to be change agents in the Michigan State University community and beyond.
Fellows meet regularly throughout the academic year with their cohort, a dynamic group of graduate student leaders from across campus. Fellows also receive one-on-one and peer mentorships and have opportunities to engage in leadership opportunities within their college and beyond. As the main effort of the Fellowship, each Fellow will develop and exercise leadership skills by creating a change-oriented project aimed at enhancing graduate student well-being.

The MSU AGEP Learning Community is an informal environment where students from varying disciplines can gather, share their research in a 10-minute presentation, or discover that their graduate toils are not unusual. As part of research, it may be necessary to use test animals. This workshop will help you understand the requirements – both at the level of MSU and the federal government – that must be adhered to be able to use animals in research. Key compliance issues will be discussed as will ethical issues associated with their use. Finally, Animal Use Forms (AUF) and application procedures will be discussed as all research, teaching, and extension/outreach activities using animals must have an approved AUF from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski since 1992 has served as president of UMBC – recognized as a model for inclusive excellence and is the nation’s leading producer of Black bachelor’s degree recipients who go on to earn M.D.-Ph.Ds., and Ph.Ds. in the natural sciences and engineering. He co-founded the Meyerhoff Scholars Program. His awards are many, including the American Council on Education’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018, and this year, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) pledged $1.5 billion to support early career scientists and increase diversity in STEM through the Freeman Hrabowski Scholars Program.

This town hall will feature Dr . Freeman A. Hrabowski Ill (President Emeritus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County) and Interim President Dr. Teresa K. Woodruff, at 7:00 p.m. in the Kellogg Center Auditorium and continue with a plenary breakout session on Friday, February 24, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Henry Center.

Graduate School Write-Ins are co-sponsored by the Graduate School and The Writing Center at MSU. The write-ins are hosted and facilitated to provide writers with an opportunity to write in a shared writing space where other writers are present, and a writing center consultant/staff member is present to provide consultations for writers who would like to have a consultation appointment during the session.
Along with this, the write-ins provide an opportunity for facilitators to promote and share information about upcoming events hosted by the Graduate School, Writing Center, and other campus partners such as the University Outreach and Engagement Office and to provide resources and information that can be used to form graduate writing groups, have writing center appointments or attend workshops (provided by the Graduate School) cater to graduate students based on goals they may share during the write in.

Spend a full day with MSU's Broader Impacts (BI) consultants away from your everyday responsibilities working on the BI plan for your next National Science Foundation (NSF) proposal. We will start with a quick overview of the fundamentals of broader impacts and an introduction to the ARIS Broader Impacts Toolkit, a suite of online tools to assist you in developing your BI plan (first hour). BI consultants will be on hand throughout the day to answer your questions and provide individual consultation and feedback on your BI plan (rest of the day). BI retreat participants will come away with portions of their BI plans written.

The Graduate Employees Union and Michigan State University agreed to add 500 additional tuition credits to the tuition waiver benefit for teaching assistants. This additional benefit will be in place for 2019-2023. The Summer tuition pool is available to students appointed as teaching assistants in Summer 2023. Applications are due March 24, 2023 by 5 pm.
