Category: Grad School, University-Wide BEST is BACK: Breakfast for BESTies to Talk about BEST

    September 26, 2022

    Date:

    Monday, September 26, 2022 - 8:30am to 10:00am

    Location:

    1425 BPS

For faculty and PhD students in bioscience and engineering fields

MSU BEST is Back! Funded by NIH for its first 6 years, MSU BEST is being sustained by MSU as a professional development program designed specifically graduate students in bioscience and engineering disciplines who want to learn more about the landscape of career paths open to them.

As part of the BEST community, BESTies will participate in a structured program that helps them identify their personal BEST goals and values, find their BEST career fit, and put their BEST out in the world through one or more internship experiences.

BESTies who have graduated have gone on to amazing positions in law, government agencies, industry, and academic careers.  Research has shown that students who participate in programs like this report better engagement with their community and their work, and data suggests a shorter time-to-degree because of these clearer goals.

Come learn more about how BEST is being re-launched this year, how you or your students can engage with BEST, or just grab some breakfast and talk about career options with staff from the Office of Graduate Career Development at the MSU Graduate School.

Please register so we can make sure to have enough food!

Through a mini-lecture and interactive exercises, we will learn from the emerging literature on research teams and from each other. Participants will leave with a mental framework for thinking about their teamwork, elementary skills in each of the 5 competency areas, a personal action plan for learning more, and new relationships with colleagues from across campus.

Picture this: You’ve had your sights on a company for 3 months, researching them to learn about their market and products. Now you are sitting in a conference room, speaking to the hiring manager for a job that would be a perfect fit for you. They’ve read your resume, and they want to know more about you. All of a sudden, you think…

“How do I describe that very specialized research I’ve spent the last four years on sound interesting to someone in industry?”

If you describe your accomplishments the way the way you would at an academic conference, the interviewer is likely to get lost in the details. There is a better way. Tell stories!!

This workshop will teach you the following and more:

How to tell stories that about your research accomplishments that grab the interviewer’s interest, even when they don’t understand the science at all.
How to make your stories engaging and memorable
Five things you can tell stories about that help an industry hiring manager see that you will be a great addition to their team

    Speaker:

David M. Giltner is the founder of TurningScience and the author of the books Turning Science into Things People Need and It’s a Game, not a Formula. He has spent more than 20 years commercializing photonics technology and is an internationally recognized speaker and mentor for early career scientists and engineers seeking careers in industry. David has a BS and PhD in physics and holds six patents in the fields of laser spectroscopy and optical communications.

In the MSU workshop, STEM undergraduate and graduate students will participate in a 5-part series that will include an overview of the GRFP and application process, first-hand advice from GRFP reviewers and recent awardees, and two interactive sessions to review and revise their application documents. The workshop will also provide a timeline and guidance for requesting recommendation letters. In addition to preparing a more competitive GRFP application, workshop participants will gain experience drafting a research outline and conveying their research to broad audiences.

The fourth and fifth workshops will be an opportunity for workshop participants get feedback on their research statement and personal statements from fellow participants. Workshop facilitators will start each session with an overview of how to review an application and reminders of the review criteria. Workshop participants will then be free to review and provide feedback to each other. These sessions will not be live-streamed.
