This workshop is the first of a three-part workshop series called Thriving in Graduate School, cosponsored by the Council of Graduate Students and the Office of Graduate Student Life and Wellness. If you are not able to attend in person, we will make a recording of the session available to you.
Whether you are just beginning in a graduate/professional degree program or are trying to enter this year with a fresh perspective, come to this session and discuss concrete ways to have a strong start. We’ll talk about how to set yourself up for success by knowing the rights and resources available to you at MSU. We’ll also share stress-management and time-management tips that will help you get the most out of your very limited time.

Is working from home making it hard to find writing time? Would scheduling regular, specific times to write about your community outreach or engagement work be helpful? If so, please join us on the first Friday of each month for three hours of dedicated time to advance your scholarship. Past participants have written journal articles, grant proposals, book chapters, theses or dissertations, curricula, pieces for public audiences, and community engagement portfolios. Participants should plan to write for the full three hours. We start the write-in by sharing writing goals for the day and wrap up with accomplishments and next steps. Both in-person and virtual write-in options are available 2022-2023. Write-Ins are free, but registration is required.

The MSU AGEP Program is conducting a workshop series that will present NSF GRFP program information and provide structured practice to create competitive GRFP application. The MSU workshop is based on similar workshops at other universities that have resulted in an increase in the number of successful GRFP applications. In the MSU workshop, STEM undergraduate and graduate students will participate in a 5-part series that will include an overview of the GRFP and application process, first-hand advice from GRFP reviewers and recent awardees, and two interactive sessions to review and revise their application documents. The workshop will also provide a timeline and guidance for requesting recommendation letters. In addition to preparing a more competitive GRFP application, workshop participants will gain experience drafting a research outline and conveying their research to broad audiences.
The introductory workshop will provide an overview of the GRFP award and the benefits. In addition, the workshop will provide a hands-on personal statement writing opportunity for preparation for fellowship applications.

The introductory workshop will go into more detail about the GRFP award, and the required application documents. In addition, the workshop will walk through the application timeline, how to request letters of recommendation, advice for the research statement, and practice activities to prepare the participants to start their GRFP application. The panel will be live-streamed to participating universities.

In bi-weekly Virtual Lunch and Learn & Best Practices in Teaching gatherings Graduate Teaching Assistants share their knowledge about teaching, teaching and technology tools as well as discuss research of teaching, book chapters relevant to work in an instructional setting. Anyone interested in these topics can join these meetings.
Description & Learning OutcomesA few years ago, very few instructors at MSU depended on learning management systems and virtual meetings to interact with their students, much less designed their courses to be delivered online. Due to the long phase of emergency remote learning, teaching at MSU now may involve using many modalities, including face-to-face classroom instruction, synchronous hybrid instruction, blended learning, and fully online courses with or without virtual meetings. This session is NOT intended to inform you about the many ways in which you might be expected to deliver instruction. It is intended to turn the question on its head and ask what affordances and approaches, from the wide range available to us now, will help you to connect to your students and connect your students to each other as you strive to guide them toward the objectives of each course. Drawing on sociocultural theories of learning and social presence as well as practical tips for using D2L, Teams, and other tools, we will discuss your experiences, preferences, questions, and recommendations to each other as you move into the new academic year.
Facilitated by Dr. Amanda Lanier, Director of the FLT Graduate Programs at MSU
Presenter Bio:Amanda Lanier (Ph.D., Georgia State University) is an applied linguist and language teacher educator who focuses on social and cultural aspects of language learning, teacher cognition, and technology in language teaching and learning. She began her career teaching English as a foreign and second language, and she has worked with teachers of over 20 languages and language varieties. Through her role as instructor and director in a fully online graduate program, MSU’s MA in Foreign Language Teaching (http://maflt.cal.msu.edu), Dr. Lanier has designed a dozen online graduate courses on topics including pedagogical methods, intercultural competence, language acquisition theories, and program development and administration and also become an advocate for online learning and teaching. The Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) at Michigan State University (MSU) was started with funding from the National Science Foundation. MSU AGEP supports recruitment, retention, and graduation of underrepresented U. S. minorities in doctoral programs of the natural and social sciences, mathematics, and engineering. The MSU AGEP Learning Community is an informal environment where students from varying disciplines can gather, share their research in a 10-minute presentation, or discover that their graduate toils are not unusual. Those in attendance are privy to information regarding fellowships, career opportunities, even summer internships, pertaining to the group.

This interactive, hybrid writing workshop is designed to help you develop an individualized plan for graduate writing, especially comprehensive exams, dissertation proposals, and dissertations. Session 1 is generally designed for students in the early years of their PhD study.
In this 3-hour workshop, plans for time management and working with others, especially during these unprecedented times in higher education, will be the main focus. Participants will create academic timelines for their PhD work at MSU and discuss technologies and habits that can help them stay on task. Participants will also discuss how to manage the stress that often pervades the life of PhD students and how that stress might be particularly amplified. Facilitators will help guide these discussions and share resources and strategies for overcoming writer's block and procrastination and adopting and maintaining productive practices to consider how to balance time management and prioritizing academic goals.
Additionally, discussion about selecting and working with committees will provide a space for sharing about and learning how to communicate with faculty members about research and writing.

This interactive, hybrid writing workshop is designed to help students develop an individualized plan for understanding graduate school more generally and graduate writing more specifically. This workshop is designed for students in both the early and latter years of their master’s degree.
This 3-hour workshop will concentrate on understanding the transition to graduate school, navigating master’s degree coursework and graduation options (thesis, exams, portfolios, etc.), locating and using professional and personal support resources, and writing for both the degree and future job. Participants will create academic timelines for their master’s work (coursework, conference presentations, internships, etc.) at MSU and discuss technologies and habits that can help them stay on task. Participants will also discuss how to manage the stress that often pervades the life of master’s students and how to select and work with a committee.
The workshop will end with participants exploring and sharing their current writing practices, writing and revision strategies, and strategies for overcoming writer's block and procrastination. Facilitators will help guide discussions on adopting and maintaining productive practices to help maintain focus on academic and professional goals in times when we are collectively working through the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing racial and systematic injustice and police violence against the Black community.

MSU BEST is Back! Funded by NIH for its first 6 years, MSU BEST is being sustained by MSU as a professional development program designed specifically graduate students in bioscience and engineering disciplines who want to learn more about the landscape of career paths open to them.
As part of the BEST community, BESTies will participate in a structured program that helps them identify their personal BEST goals and values, find their BEST career fit, and put their BEST out in the world through one or more internship experiences.
BESTies who have graduated have gone on to amazing positions in law, government agencies, industry, and academic careers. Research has shown that students who participate in programs like this report better engagement with their community and their work, and data suggests a shorter time-to-degree because of these clearer goals.

The next generation of scholars will increasingly work in teams. Yet, team research skills are not often an explicit part of early career training. This in-person, two-hour workshop will introduce graduate students and post-doctoral scholars to 5 core competencies for research team success. Through a mini-lecture and interactive exercises, we will learn from the emerging literature on research teams and from each other. Participants will leave with a mental framework for thinking about their teamwork, elementary skills in each of the 5 competency areas, a personal action plan for learning more, and new relationships with colleagues from across campus.

Award, fellowship, grant, and scholarship submission calls often sneak up on us, and can sometimes feel overwhelming depending on the submission criteria one must gather amidst the academic year. Walk with me through my MAGS Excellence in Teaching Award submission journey, asking questions along the way and setting aside some of your own teaching goodies as we go.

Dr. Campbell earned a B.A. from San Diego State University in 2006, and a Masters and Ph.D. in Psychology from Michigan State University in 2012. After over 10 years of service, Dr. Campbell started Academe180, a professional development group designed to provide support for academics transitioning into the workplace. She is also an author and illustrator of a children’s book for adults titled “The ABC’s of Negotiating”.
