GTAs take on multiple roles as students, teaching assistants, and mentors. This discussion-based workshop is about how to best respond to several (real!) situations encountered in graduate school. The session will consist of short presentation and authentic conversations on how to navigate the various aspects that come with being a graduate student.

Syllabi are considered the key to student and instructor success. With that in mind, it is important to communicate expectations clearly using inclusive syllabus language to support students of all backgrounds and establishing a culture of care. In this session, instructors and advanced GTAs will discuss how they develop their syllabi using the syllabus checklist and how and use it as a tool for effective instruction. After this session participants will be able to identify important elements of a syllabus and employ clear and supportive language in setting and communicating expectations for a successful semester for the students and instructor.

In this session Dr. Shannon Lynn Burton (MSU Ombudsperson) will present key strategies in discussing the importance of academic integrity, as well as in preventing misconduct, both in its more traditional forms, as well as in the digital space. Additionally, university policies and procedures in responding to misconduct will be explored to assist you in navigating these conversations. Participants will have the chance to discuss scenarios and think about strategies for how to communicate clearly with students including discussions about AI.

Feedback on Instruction and Student Perceptions of Learning Survey Feedback on Instruction and Student Perceptions of Learning Survey

MSU has adopted a new instructional feedback system – the Student Perceptions of Learning Survey (SPLS) last summer. If you are in an instructional role at MSU you receive SPLS scores at the end of the semester. In this session we will share about the SPLS and information about the implementation considerations, prepare you for what to expect and discuss what the scores mean for you. Furthermore, we will discuss the importance of collecting feedback on instruction at an ongoing basis and the benefits of doing so.

You are a new Graduate Teaching Assistant and/or want to learn more about MSU’s learning management system (D2L) features to support your instructional role. Join us for this session in which two experts from MSU Instructional Technology role will get you started on D2L features such as the Gradebook, Accessibility Checkers, Intelligent Agents, and share best practices to effectively use D2L for effective communication and student success. Come prepared to ask questions to get the most out of this session.
