This interactive online writing workshop is designed to help students develop an individualized plan for understanding graduate school more generally and graduate writing more specifically. This workshop is designed for students in both the early and latter years of their master’s degree.
This 3-hour workshop will concentrate on understanding the transition to graduate school, navigating master’s degree coursework and graduation options (thesis, exams, portfolios, etc.), locating and using professional and personal support resources, and writing for both the degree and future job. Participants will create academic timelines for their master’s work (coursework, conference presentations, internships, etc.) at MSU and discuss technologies and habits that can help them stay on task. Participants will also discuss how to manage the stress that often pervades the life of master’s students and how to select and work with a committee.
The workshop will end with participants exploring and sharing their current writing practices, writing and revision strategies, and strategies for overcoming writer's block and procrastination. Facilitators will help guide discussions on adopting and maintaining productive practices to help maintain focus on academic and professional goals in times when we are collectively working through the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing racial and systematic injustice and police violence against the Black community.

Many jobs, especially academic positions, ask students to submit a “diversity statement” with their application materials. Many job seekers, unfortunately, treat such a document as an afterthought, when in fact it is a powerful opportunity to talk about your goals, values, and the kind of faculty member or academic leader you aspire to be.
In this session, Kayon Hall (HALE) will walk you through the process of understanding what is expected in a strong diversity statement and help you clarify the values you will highlight in your own diversity statement. At the end of this session, you will have a draft document that you can confidently refine, knowing it represents you well.
Presenter Bio: Kayon Hall is a PhD candidate in HALE program. Kayon’s research focuses on DEI, and anti-black racism in higher education. Her current work examines the intersection of race and immigration status. Prior to MSU, Kayon worked eight years as an administrator in student affairs, including serving as Associate Director of Career Planning and Employer and Graduate Relations at the College of Wooster.

But the IRB Approved It!: Data Science Research Ethics and the Challenges of Inference, Public Data and Consent
Dr. Jake Metcalf, Director of the AI on the Ground Initiative at the Data & Society Research Institute
Data science, and the related disciplines of machine learning and artificial intelligence, are founded on the assumed availability of massive amounts of data. The scientific and economic justification for collecting and using all that data is deceptively simple: we can infer expensive- and hard-to-know data from cheap- and easy-to-know data and make predictions and automated decisions on the basis of the patterns we find. When that data is about human behavior, that inferential step is ethically fraught because it often involves data that is ubiquitous (social media, geolocation, biometrics, etc.) being used to predict traits that are from an entirely different context (race, religion, sexual preference, gender, etc.), and typically without knowledge or consent. This is a highly complex ethical challenge, yet our research ethics norms and regulations were written for a different paradigm of scientific research. In this talk, I will illustrate this dynamic with several cases of data science research ethics controversies and consider how we might establish new practices for ethical research.

Faculty and assistant deans of The Graduate School are often spotted in the meetings, always receptive to questions and innovative suggestions.

Graduate School Write-Ins are co-sponsored by the Graduate School and The Writing Center @ MSU. The write-ins are hosted and facilitated to provide writers with an opportunity to write in a shared writing space where other writers are present, and a writing center consultant/staff member is present to provide consultations for writers who would like to have a consultation appointment during the session.
Along with this, the write-ins provide an opportunity for facilitators to promote and share information about upcoming events hosted by the Graduate School, Writing Center, and other campus partners such as the University Outreach and Engagement Office and to provide resources and information that can be used to form graduate writing groups, have writing center appointments or attend workshops (provided by the Graduate School) cater to graduate students based on goals they may share during the write in

Fall 2021 TA Tuition Pool Closes Fall 2021 TA Tuition Pool Closes

The Graduate Employees Union and Michigan State University agreed to add 500 additional tuition credits to the tuition waiver benefit for teaching assistants. This additional benefit will be in place for 2019-2023. The Fall tuition pool is available to students appointed as teaching assistants in Fall 2021. Applications are due June 25, 2021 by 5 pm.
