This workshop explores the basics of digital accessibility and the resources that are available to instructors at MSU. We will explore components of Universal Design for Learning and discuss the ways educators can apply these principles to their own courses. This course is intended for instructors of students at any level. 

Upon completion of this learning experience participants will be able to:

Explain the importance of implementing digital accessibility practices in the classroom 
Recognize the concepts involved in universal design for learning (UDL)
Identify resources related to digital accessibility that are available at MSU
Discuss possibilities for making their new and/or existing courses accessible

Facilitator: Dr. Katherine (Katie) Knowles received her PhD in the Department of English at Michigan State University. She is also pursuing the Certification in College Teaching and earned the Graduate Certificate in Digital Humanities. She received her BA from Hanover College and her MA from the University of Birmingham’s Shakespeare Institute. Knowles has acted as both a GA and the instructor of record for a variety of IAH courses during her time at MSU, and she was a CTLI fellow for the 2023-2024 academic year during which she developed a project on Digital Accessibility at MSU.

Join the Pursuing Intentional Learning in Organizations Together (PILOT) Project, a four-week series aimed at bridging the gap between graduating students and non-academic professionals. Held weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4pm on Zoom, this program provides graduate students with insights and practical strategies for transitioning from academia to non-academic careers. Each Tuesday, guest speakers from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) will offer their expertise, while Thursdays will feature interactive workshops to further explore the topics discussed.
