RECR Workshop: Research Collaborations and Student Conflicts of Interest

Category: Grad School, University-Wide RECR Workshop: Research Collaborations and Student Conflicts of Interest

    January 30, 2024

    Date:

    Tuesday, January 30, 2024 - 6:00pm to 7:30pm

    Location:

    Zoom

Research collaboration involves individuals working together to achieve a common goal of producing new scientific knowledge, insight on a problem, or understanding of a phenomenon. Collaboration also helps build stronger connections amongst coworkers making the team unit more successful and efficient than working individually on the same tasks. Collaboration is one of the most important parts of your graduate studies. This workshop will review guidelines to following when looking to initiate collaboration and best practices for effective collaboration. The session will also explore student conflicts of interest that can arise in research and creative activity. These can occur when there is a divergence between an individual’s private interests and his or her professional obligations to the University such that an independent observer might reasonably question the individual’s professional actions or decisions.

Writing a winning grant requires a winning strategy. In this two-day (January 26 and February 2, 2024) NIH-focused webinar designed for faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and administrative staff who have some exposure to writing grant applications, Write Winning Grants comprehensively covers practical and conceptual aspects essential to the proposal-writing process. Learn how to tailor your content to relevant agencies, develop strategies for each section of the application, and to articulate your proposal in a way that makes reviewers want to read it.

Attendees will receive a copy of The Grant Application Writer’s Workbook, which has been written to complement and extend the seminar. The cost to order and receive your agency-specific workbook is $90. The presenter is John D. Robertson, managing member of the Grant Writers’ Seminars & Workshops, LLC.

This seminar is appropriate for doctoral students who have had some exposure to writing grant applications, either through training, mentoring, or personal experience. Interested doctoral students should be planning on writing a grant in the near future.

Additional information about the seminar can be found at https://research.msu.edu/event/write-winning-grants

The Graduate School and COGS will pay for 50 doctoral students to attend. Preference will be given to those students who have not previously attended. To have the Graduate School/COGS pay the $90 registration fee, please complete this form by Thursday, January 4. You will need to pay a $10 deposit to hold your reservation. The $10 will be returned to you in February after your attendance at the seminar is confirmed.

When the registration is full, if able to pay the $90 fee, students can still sign up for this conference here: https://research.msu.edu/event/write-winning-grants

Would scheduling regular, specific times to write about your outreach or engagement work be helpful? If so, please join us on the first Friday of each month for three hours of dedicated time to advance your scholarship. Past participants have written journal articles, grant proposals, book chapters, theses or dissertations, curricula, pieces for public audiences, and community engagement portfolios. Participants should plan to write for the full three hours. We start the write-in by sharing writing goals for the day and wrap up with accomplishments and next steps.

Write-Ins are free, but registration is required. *Please note that your registration is a commitment to attend.
