Category: Grad School, University-Wide Community-Engaged Scholarship Writing Retreat

    March 7, 2022 March 8, 2022

    Date:

    Monday, March 7, 2022 - 12:00am to Tuesday, March 8, 2022 - 11:55pm

    Location:

Pierce Cedar Creek Institute, Hastings, MI

Thinking about new writing and publishing goals in 2022? Feeling a bit stretched thin with your responsibilities and commitments to others? This writing retreat is especially for those who need protected time and space away from campus and other responsibilities to dedicate to academic writing. Pierce Cedar Creek Institute offers private guest rooms and spacious indoor writing spaces with natural scenery for inspiration to write about community-engaged research, community partnerships, broader impacts work, service-learning, and other writing that supports engagement with partners beyond campus borders.

This two-day, residential retreat includes both unstructured writing time and optional structured writing support, including workshops, consultations, and peer feedback. Consultants from The Writing Center and University Outreach and Engagement will be available to provide feedback both days and will build connections among the writers throughout the retreat, so that even while writing on your own, you are part of a supportive community.

Last fall’s writers worked on literature reviews, grant proposals, journal revise and resubmits, journal articles, white papers, book manuscripts, community-engagement curriculum, and pieces for community partners. The 2021 writers said they appreciated: “getting away from everything to just write,” “talking with others about their ideas and project,” “feeling less alone while writing,” and “beautiful scenery, great food, supportive colleagues.” Join us for another great writing retreat in spring 2022.

    APIDA Heritage Month Kick-Off

Category: Grad School, University-Wide APIDA Heritage Month Kick-Off

    March 16, 2022

    Date:

    Wednesday, March 16, 2022 - 6:30pm to 8:30pm

    Location:

    MSU Union Ballroom/Zoom

The Graduate School is proud to be a sponsor of Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Heritage Month 2022.

Join us to kick off APIDA Heritage Month in the MSU Union Ballroom. There will be snacks, giveaways, and more.

The kickoff event features a cooking demo and Q&A with Chef Jon Kung (they/he), who will be joining via Zoom. Chef Jon will be doing a cooking demo, talking about his experience, and answering questions.

Jon Kung is a rising star and self-taught chef hailing from Detroit, Michigan. A self-described “Third Culture Kid,” Jon always felt he grew up with his feet firmly planted in two different worlds; the culture the country his parents immigrated from, Hong Kong, and the culture of the adoptive countries he grew up in, America and Canada.

Before the Covid-19 Pandemic, the only way to experience Jon’s unique cooking and personality were at one of his private dinners or dumpling classes in Detroit. But in 2020, Jon launched a TikTok account with 60 second daily cooking demos that have garnered him more than 2 million followers and tens of millions of views across his social platforms.

Registration is required. While registering, attendees will also be able to submit questions to Chef Jon. Visit the Student Life website for more info on Chef Jon.

Are you applying for jobs/internships? Many jobs, especially academic positions, ask students to submit a “diversity statement” with their application materials. Many job seekers, unfortunately, treat such a document as an afterthought, when in fact it is a powerful opportunity to talk about your goals, values, and the kind of faculty member or academic leader you aspire to be.

In this workshop, we will walk you through the process of recognizing your identities and positionality, and the role of DEI in your teaching, research, service, and community efforts. At the end of this session, you will have a working draft you can confidently refine, and which will empower you to continue your efforts toward DEI in any space.
