Publication of a scholarly work makes you an author - and that’s both exciting and a responsibility. This session will be dedicated to understanding the definitions and disagreements about what constitutes an author, how conflicts are resolved, how to avoid such conflicts, and where/to whom to go for help about authorship issues.
Plagiarism - stealing the work of another - is an increasing problem in the scholarly community. At MSU, this ranks as the #1 allegation of research misconduct. This session will also aim to help you understand what plagiarism is, how to test for it within your own work, how to discuss plagiarism, and where to go for advice on plagiarism.

Global Ethics Symposium Global Ethics Symposium
–
October 14, 2021Date:
Thursday, October 14, 2021 - 8:00am to 5:30pm
Location:
Multi-purpose room of the Edward J. Minskoff Pavilion at the Eli Broad College of Business
MSU is proposing to establish an Institute for Global Ethics in Theory & Practice where leading-edge research in ethical theory will shape global ethical practice, and knowledge of ethical practices will inform the further development of theory. In addition to catalyzing research in ethical theory and its applied practice, the Institute aims to provide students transformative classroom and experiential opportunities to discover the norms and values that will guide their careers and lives, and advance community-engaged activities. The goal of such an Institute would be to enhance MSU’s ongoing work in applied ethics with the development of deep expertise in global ethical theory across disciplines related to global ethics and social justice.
To further this goal and to provide a roadmap for such an Institute, MSU is organizing an Ethics Symposium on October 14th, 2021. The Symposium will have two featured keynote speakers: (a) Anita Allen and (b) Kirk O. Hanson. The speakers are expected to shed light on both the philosophical and practical dimensions of the functioning of such an Institute. Each keynote will be followed by a focus group of faculties who are interested in the various issues of outreach, research, practice, and pedagogy.
We seek graduate, professional, and post-doc student applicants who want to take part in the event as note takers and participants. A committee will evaluate all applications and will select candidates based on how their application fits with the goals of the Symposium. There are only a maximum of 10 awards. Each selected candidate will receive a $500 stipend for their role in note taking and participation. This award is being made possible by the Farrehi Family Foundation.
Applicants need to submit: (a) an up-to-date resume, (b) a short paragraph (200 words) statement of the relevance of the Symposium to your current interests in theory and practice of ethics; and (c) a description of how participation will contribute to your career pursuits (less than 200 words). The link for the application is here: https://msu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bQuaTvfLlh6etBs Please apply before 5pm on October 1st for consideration. Navigating the PhD Workshop (Session 1) Navigating the PhD Workshop (Session 1)
–
October 15, 2021Date:
Friday, October 15, 2021 - 9:00am to 12:00pm
Location:
Zoom
This interactive online writing workshop is designed to help you develop an individualized plan for graduate writing, especially comprehensive exams, dissertation proposals, and dissertations. Session 1 is generally designed for students in the early years of their PhD study.
In this 3-hour workshop, plans for time management and working with others, especially during these unprecedented times in higher education, will be the main focus. Participants will create academic timelines for their PhD work at MSU and discuss technologies and habits that can help them stay on task. Participants will also discuss how to manage the stress that often pervades the life of PhD students and how that stress might be particularly amplified during this year considering that we are collectively working through the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing racial and systematic injustice and police violence against the Black community.
Facilitators will help guide these discussions and share resources and strategies for overcoming writer's block and procrastination and adopting and maintaining productive practices to consider how to balance time management and prioritizing academic goals.
Additionally, discussion about selecting and working with committees will provide a space for sharing about and learning how to communicate with faculty members about research and writing.
A Zoom link will be shared with registrants prior to the date of the workshop.

This interactive online writing workshop is designed to help you develop an individualized plan for graduate writing, especially comprehensive exams, dissertation proposals, and dissertations. Session 2 is designed for students in the latter years of their PhD study.
In this 3-hour workshop, the focus will be on developing and maintaining productive and effective writing processes and practices, especially during these unprecedented times in higher education and in society where we are collectively working through the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing racial and systematic injustice and police violence against the Black community.
Every PhD program at MSU requires comprehensive exams, dissertation proposals, and dissertations. In the workshop, participants will explore and share their current writing practices and be given practical writing and revision strategies. During the latter half of the workshop, participants will draft a plan for developing and completing their dissertations.
