Key information about the DDRA program:
T his is a competitive grant program funded by the US Department of Educatio n that enables US citizen/permanent resident PhD candidates to do disserta tion research abroad for six to twelve months.
Awards generally provide i nternational airfare, a maintenance allowance based on living costs in th e host country, research-related expenses, and supplemental insurance.
Grants are available worldwide except for Western Europe and must be relat ed to language or area studies. Area studies can be broadly defined and ca n include interdisciplinary fields.
Fellows must possess a high enough la nguage proficiency level to carry out their research in the target languag e.
The competition is expected to open in the coming weeks; the publicat ion date has varied widely in past years, and the transition to a new adm inistration in Washington could impact timing.
