Graduate students interested in Open committees positions should fill out a committee application and send it to the COGS office (cogs@msu.edu).

Listed below are the Committees, the number of seats available for COGS appointments, the committee descriptions, and the COGS Committee Members.


UNIVERSITY COMMITTEES

ACADEMIC COUNCIL - (7) Meeting Schedule
This council is composed of faculty and students and is the highest body to consider academic programs and procedures of the University. It also approves general student rights and responsibilities. Meetings are held once a month, usually Tuesdays at 3:15-5:00 p.m. According to COGS by-laws, the Vice President for University Relations and the President are automatically appointed. Four more graduate representatives are elected resulting in 7 representatives total. ACCOMODATING TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE - (1)
Analyzing and recommending, to VP of Library and technologies, improvements to the University's handicapper accessibilities policies which promote successful applications of technology in accomodating self-relience and productivity for students, graduates, faculty and administrators who experience physical or sensory impairments. (09/10 - OPEN)

DATABASE SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE COMMUNICATIONS AND COMPUTER SYSTEMS ADVISORY COMMITTEE (CCSAC) - (2)
The Database Subcommittee advises the CCSAC on matters regarding the acquisition and support of database products for the university community. Meets 5-6 times per semester. (09/10 - OPEN, OPEN)

DPS OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE - (1)
Review complaints against officers. Meets bi-monthly. 2 year term. (09-11 A. Ratkiewicz)

EAST LANSING UNIVERSITY STUDENT COMMISSION - (1)
Meets to improve student and local relations; establish a formal link between University student population and the government of the city; review issues that have a potential to affect lifestyle, livelihood and/or regular activities of the student population. This committee meets on the second Tuesdays of every month at 5:30 PM in Conference Room A in City Hall. (09/10 - Megan Cashen)

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF ACADEMIC COUNCIL -Meeting Schedule(2 -members must also be on UGC)
The Executive Committee shall meet periodically with the President and Provost for an exchange of information and views on University Policy. The Executive Committee shall act on behalf of Academic Council on occasions when action is needed before Academic Council can be called to session. Meetings are once per month on a Tuesday from 3:15-5:00. (09/10 - Rachel Naegele-auto, Shannon Nicley)

INSTRUCTIONAL COMPUTING & TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE - (1)
Considers and make's recommendations to directors of appropriate academic and administrative units on matters relevant to instructional computer use including, but not restricted to: Management of Instruction, Advising, Curriculum Management, Support Services for Faculty. (09/10 - OPEN)

RADIO BOARD - (1)
This is a governing body of MSU Student Radio. Meets when necessary. (09/10-Laleah Fernandez)

UNITED WAY STEERING COMMITTEE - (1)
This committee provides opportunities that generate student awareness and support activities for MSU United Way community charitable campaign. You will be contacted about meetings through e-mail. There will be a luncheon, a kick-off in September, and an awards celebration. (09/10 - Megan Cashen)

UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON OUT OF STATE FEES - (1)
One representative is needed. This committee receives information to review in the mail. Materials consist of students presenting cases requesting to be considered in-state for purposes of reducing tuition costs. After review committee votes by phone. The committee meets if there is a matter requiring special discussion. (09/10 - Robert Hakari)

WOMEN'S ORGANIZATIONAL COORDINATING COUNCIL - (1)
This is an informal committee discussing women's issues. There will be 2 or 3 group projects during the year.(09/10 - Megan Cashen)

UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE FOR SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS - (1) Calendar of Events
This is a committee that meets monthly to discuss sustainability issues on campus and to review and advise the Office of Campus Sustainability. (09/10 - Connor Ryan)

BOARD ELECTED COMMITTEES

ALL-UNIVERSITY TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE - (2) Meeting Schedule
Responsible for recommending to the Vice President for finance and Operations and Treasure all changes in the faculty, staff and student motor vehicle codes at MSU. Must handle all the appeals for parking violations. Further requires establishing policies, practices, procedures for parking permits on campus as well as recommend various other changes to be made in the general traffic flow to, from and within MSU. *One rep must be a resident of Owen Hall. ATHLETIC COUNCIL - (1)
This committee reviews issues pertaining to University athletics. There must be 3 nominees, and the President will select 1. Nominee's must submit a letter of intent and qualifications to the President's office. This committee meets once per month. (Scott Hirko until summer 2011)

WOMEN'S ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO THE PROVOST -(1)
Assists in identifying and in suggesting solutions on important issues relative to the roles and participation of women in the academic area of the University. The committee consults with the Provost and/or members of the Provost's staff to clarify academic issues. It meets the 2nd Monday of each month from 1:00-3:00 pm. Three year appointment. Application is required and due by March 30th. (Shannon McGraw until 2010)

WOMEN'S ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO THE VP FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS - (1)
Advises and makes recommendations to the Vice-President for Student Affairs and Services about issues and concerns of women students. Meets Tuesdays 4pm, once a month.(09/10 - Connie Zheng )

ADVISORY COMMITTEES

PRESIDENT'S ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON DISABILITY ISSUES - (1)
This person is chosen by the President and serves a three year term. Nominations need to be sumbitted by March 1st. Nominees need to submit a bio letter with statement why they want to serve on the committee. (09-12 - Monica VanAcker)

UNIVERSTIY ACTIVITIES ADVISORY BOARD
- (2)
Representatives from various student organizations meet once a month to discuss enhancing the Union building and its services. Meets 1st Thursday of each month from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Dinner is served. (09/10 - OPEN, OPEN)

OLIN HEALTH CENTER ADVISORY BOARD - (1)
This committee discusses issues pertaining to Olin Health Center. Meetings are to be announced. (09/10 - Heather Sprague)

UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON HONORS PROGRAMS - (1) Committee Page
This committee advises and consults the Director of the Honors College. It reviews, evaluates, and recommends programs, opportunities, and activities for honor students within the colleges and departments of the University, including the Honors College. It also recommends to the Academic Council standards for granting of honor degrees. Committee meets once per semester or as needed. One representative with a BA from the Honors College is needed. It may be necessary to advertise this position in order to call the Honors College to inquire about possible candidates. (09-10 - Adam Lovgren)

UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON INTERNATIONAL STUDIES AND PROGRAMS - (2) Committee Page
This committee serves in an advisory-consultative capacity on all matters concerning International Projects, including study programs abroad, foreign student affairs, exchange relationships with foreign institutions, and contractual projects. It advises and consults the Dean on all foreign projects that are part of the University. Two representatives are needed. In the best situation, at least one member should be an international student. Meets approximately 2-3 times per semester. (09/10 - Laleah Fernandez, Raja Zalinda Jamil)

UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE FOR THE LIBRARY

Advises and consults the Director of lthe Libraries. It reviews, evaluates, and makes recommendations on all policy matters pertaining to the libraries. The committee also serves as one of the channels of communication between the libraries, faculty and students. One members are needed. Meets once per semester or as needed. (09/10 - Robin Blom)

STANDING COMMITTEES OF ACADEMIC GOVERNANCE

UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON ACADEMIC GOVERNANCE (UCAG)

The committee conducts a continuing review of the By-Laws for Academic Governance; it considers appeals of reviews of department By-Laws by college committees, provides guidelines for Academic Council elections and nominations to Academic Council committees. This is a standing committee of Academic Council. Committee meets approximately once a month on Thursdays at 3:15 and 2 representatives are needed. One rep is VPIA. UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON ACADEMIC POLICY (UCAP)

UCAP deals with all matters of academic policy affecting the University such as evaluation of instruction, advising and counseling, policy and distribution of educational and research resources. This is a standing committee of Academic Council. Committee meets every other Thursday @ 10:15 am in the Board Room of the Administration Building. Two representatives are needed. UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON CURRICULUM

This committee deals with criteria for the establishment and deletion of courses, curricula and degree requirements proposed by academic units, as well as the approval and rejection of changes in graduate and graduate-professional courses recommended by the Graduate Council. This is a standing committee of Academic Council. Committee meets every Thursday 1:30-5:00 pm after appointed to subcommittees. Two representatives are needed. (09/10 - Amanda Herzog, OPEN)

UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON FACULTY TENURE
- (1) Committee Page
This committee is the judicial and investigating agency for all tenure actions, such as interpreting tenure rules and acting on all cases of deviation from the rules. This is a standing committee of Academic Council. One representative is needed. Committee provides excellent opportunity to learn about tenure process for someone who may plan to work in academia after Graduate school. (09/10 - Amber Cook)

UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON STUDENT AFFAIRS - (2) Committee Page
Advises the Division of Student Affairs and Services on policies as they affect achievement, initiates and reviews amendments to the Academic Freedom Report and General Student Regulations. This committee meets once a month or twice a semester. This is a standing committee of Academic Council. This committee requires 2 representatives and meets once a month. UNIVERSITY GRADUATE COUNCIL
- (5)Committee PageUGC has shared responsibility with the Dean of coordination of graduate programs, and on policy pertaining to financial aid. This is a standing committee of Academic Council. This committee requires 5 COGS representatives, 2 of which are the President and the Vice-President for Graduate Welfare. This is a very active committee and often will have volunteers. JUDICIARY COMMITTEES

ANTI-DISCRIMINATION JUDICIAL BOARD (ADJB) - (1)
This person is chosen by the President of the University. Application is available through the President's Office. There is no need to contact the office to become familiar with the President's selection process. Meets once per semester for the board. Hearings depend upon cases presented. (Nicholas Reif -until 2010)

ALL-UNIVERSITY STUDENT JUDICIARY (AUSJ) - (3)
This committee is responsible for hearing and deciding non-academic disciplinary cases. The board consists of graduate land undergraduate students and is advised by a member of the MSU Judicial Affairs professional staff. This position requires a time commitment of one weekday from 6:30-9:30 pm per week. It is a 2 yr. appointment. 2-3 graduate students needed. Application at Student Life Judicial Affairs. UNIVERSITY STUDENT FACULTY JUDICIARY (SFJ) - (1) Committee Page
This committee deals with alleged violations of all university policies or alleged violations of regulations other than those related to academic dishonesty, violations of professional standards, or falsification of admission or academic records as referred by the Office of Student Affairs and Services. One graduate representative serve a two year appointment. In addition an alternative representative is needed. The alternative will be actively involved in hearings throughout the semester. Meets every Tuesday for 4-6 hours. Application or appointment required. Contact Student Life Judicial Affairs. (09/10 - Ann Dwyer)

UNIVERSITY GRADUATE JUDICIARY Committee Page
Listens to graduate grievances filed against the University or an instructor. These grievances are based on the GSSR. This committee rarely meets regularly, only when a case arises. No application needed as with some of the other judiciaries. (09/10 - David Achila, John Petkus, OPEN)

UNIVERSITY GRADUATE-PROFESSIONAL JUDICIARY - (5)
This judiciary meets only when a case arises. The committee consists of 5 graduate students, 3 of which are members from each of the 3 medical colleges and 2 of which are not. (09/10- Vibha Gupta (HM), Madhan Subramanian (VM), John Bunka (OM), Brandon Perry, Michael Rubin)

UNIVERSITY STUDENT APPEALS BOARD (USAB) -(1) Committee Page
The graduate student representative is a member of a 7 member board which listens to cases that have been appealed from other boards or administrators. The individual should have previous judicial experience and have lived in a residence hall. The board is comprised of 2 undergraduates, one graduate and four faculty members that meet weekly for 1 1/2 hours-times set according to members. Application through Student Life Judicial Affairs. COGS COMMITTEES

COGS COMMITTEE FOR GOVERNMENT AND LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS -
(4)
Members shall serve as liaisons between the Council of Graduate Students and State, Local and Federal agencies which affect the University. The President shall chair this committee. (09/10 - Rachel Naegele, Jennifer William, Lori Hoisington, Marisa Rinkus)

COGS FINANCE COMMITTEE - (6)
The Finance Committee shall be charged with preparation and publication of a quarterly report of the revenues of COGS. The Finance Committee shall meet at least one week prior to the next scheduled Full Council Meeting to review, evaluate and prepare proposals of actions which require a vote by COGS, including funding requests and other pending financial matters. The treasurer shall be the Chair and non-voting members of the Finance Committee. There shall be five voting members of the Finance Committee with three being from different University Colleges.(09/10 - Pat Carolan-auto, Andrew Ratkiewicz (NS), Amanda Herzog (ENG), Matthew Rupp(ENG), Shannon McGraw(ANR), Stefan Fletcher (LAW)

COGS GRADUATE WELFARE COMMITTEE - (4)
There shall be a Graduate Welfare Committee which shall review and consider issues pertaining to the welfare of all graduate students. At least two members shall serve on the University Graduate Council. This committee is a one year appointment. (09/10 - Adam Lovgren, Natalie Graham, D'Andrea Jacobs, Marisa Rinkus, Heather Sprague)

COGS CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS COMMITTEE - (3-7)
This committee reviews and revises constiution and by-laws of the Council of Graduate Students. (09/10 - Dominque Lewis, Amanda Herzog, Shannon McGraw, John Pekus, Chaoyi Ding, Ann Desideno, Shannon Nicely)

COGS EVENTS COMMITTEE - (6)
Shall coordinate and plan all COGS social events within the guidlines of COGS. (09/10 - Amanda Herzog, Shannon McGraw , Pat Caroloan -auto, Erin Haramoto, Karen Guyski,John Petkos)

COGS EVENTS SUBCOMMITTEE: GRADUATE ACADEMIC CONFERENCE (GAC) COMMITTEE -(7)

MICHIGAN ASSOCIATION OF GRADUATE PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS (MAGPS)

MAGPS LEGISLATIVE ACTION COMMITTEE - (1)
The purposes of the LAC shall be to research proposed legislation that may impact the lives of graduate students and enact advocacy based initiatives pertaining to items of proposed legislation, including (but no limited to) writing letters to graduate students and legislators and arranging to meet with legislators regarding proposed legislation. MAGPS RESOURCE CONSOLIDATION COMMITTEE - (1)
The purposes of the RCC shall be to gather information about all graduate and professional student organizations in the State of Michigan, issues commonly addressed by these organizations, and the strategies that these organization have used to address these issues, to link graduate student organization to one another when on organization may be able to provide guidance and/or mentorship to another organization, and to recruit colleges and universities in the State of Michigan to become involved in the MAGPS. MAGPS EVENT PLANNING COMMITTEE - (1)
The purposes of the EPC shall be to plan the annual MAGPS Summit, including determining a date, location (to be rotated each year), agenda, speaker, catering arrangements, and lodging arrangements for the meeting, and to plan any other MAGPS events, workshops, or conferences. (09/10 - OPEN)

MAGPS FINANCE COMMITTEE - (1)
The purposes of the FC shall be to manage the MAGPS budget and to find sources of funding (e.g. grants, donations) for MAGPS events and initiatives. (09/10 - Kendall Koening)

COLLEGE COMMITTEES

CANR- CURRICULUM COMMITTEE (1) Clearing house for all curriculum matters. Typically meets for two hours every two weeks, September- May, and as necessary. (OPEN)

CANR- COLLEGE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (1) Serves as an open channel of communication between the college faculty, students and the Dean. Responsbile for college elections, college faculty meeting agendas, selection of college nominees for various awards; advisory to the Dean. Meets once a month for two hours, September - May, and as necessary. (Pat Carolan)

CANR- COLLEGE GRADUATE COMMITTEE (1) Reviews new graduate programs and revisions in existing programs, selects nominees for Distinguished Graduate Fellowships, Dissertation Completion Fellowships, etc. Reviews graduate program and student issues. Also functions as College Graduate Judiciary. Meets for two hours once a month, September - May, and as necessary. (OPEN)

CANR- TEACHING & ACADEMIC POLICY COMMITTEE (1) Advises and consults with the Director of Academic Affairs on matters of teaching and academic policy. Meets as necessary, usually several times each semester. (Erin Haramoto)

THE UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON RESEARCH INVOLVING HUMAN SUBJECTS (UCRIHS)

This committee is a peer review committee, comprised of MSU Faculty Members appointed by their Deans in consultation with their faculty advisory committee. It is a member's responsibiltiy to review research protocol and deal with MSU Investigators planning to conduct research involving human subjects. Monthly meetings are held. Appointed by UCRIHS.
